Fuel Dispenser Leaders Adopt Isis Application to Allow Payment, Loyalty Programs and Offer Redemption at the Pump

NEW YORK – July 31, 2012 – Isis™, the mobile commerce joint venture created by AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, today announced that U.S. market leaders in retail fuel dispensers, Wayne, a GE Energy Business, and Gilbarco Veeder-Root, agreed to provide integrated support for the Isis SmartTap™ mobile commerce application, allowing consumers to quickly and efficiently pay, present loyalty cards and redeem offers with a single tap of their Isis Ready™ phones at the gas pump.

“The gas pump is one of the most frequented point-of-sale environments, and a critically important addition to the mobile commerce marketplace,” said Scott Mulloy, chief technology officer, Isis. “Isis is pleased to announce relationships with market leaders Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root. It creates an important opportunity for convenience stores to enhance the customer experience, thereby increasing loyalty and in-store traffic.”

Gilbarco Veeder-Root and Wayne SmartTap-enabled dispensers will be installed at select retail locations to accompany Isis’ market launch in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root’s modular payment architecture will be equipped to accept SmartTap in new, factory-installed fuel dispensers and retrofitted fuel dispensers currently installed at convenience stores across the country. As a global leader in fueling dispenser payment terminals, Gilbarco will provide convenience store retailers another way to serve customer’s payment needs.

“Mobile commerce and payments are the future,” said Mike Schulte, president of Gilbarco Veeder-Root North America. “As a worldwide technology leader in retail and commercial fueling solutions, we believe our agreement with Isis will allow us to continue to deliver industry-leading innovations to our customers.”

Wayne will integrate the Isis SmartTap mobile commerce application into the contactless/NFC reader used with the Wayne iX Pay™ Secure Payment solution. Secure, flexible and future-proof, the Wayne iX Pay Secure Payment solution offers EMV and PCI-PTS 3.0 compliance, the highest standards of pay-at-the-pump financial data security in the industry.

“Integrating the Isis SmartTap mobile commerce application will open entirely new payment, loyalty and promotional opportunities for consumers and fuel retailers using Wayne dispensers and technologies,” said Paul de la Port, vice president of products, Wayne. “We believe the simplicity and convenience of mobile commerce will have enormous appeal for consumers and retailers alike.”

Gilbarco Veeder-Root and Wayne are the latest addition to Isis’ expanding list of partners – payment systems suppliers, handset manufacturers, banks, payment networks and merchants – committed to building the infrastructure and scale necessary for mass adoption of mobile commerce.

The NFC retail payments market will exceed $180 billion by 2017 with one in four mobile users in the U.S. and Western Europe expected to make NFC payments in-store.

This is the latest mobile payments industry forecast from Juniper Research. Of note, co-author Dr. Windsor Holden said, “This is a critical time for the NFC retail payments market. Despite the significant progress being made today, the full potential of the market can only be fulfilled if all ecosystem players are equally committed and mobile wallet consortia remain in place.”

American Banker, ComputerWeekly, FierceMobileContent and Mobile Payments Today and others have also emphasized that NFC has reached a tipping point but that commitment from the entire payments ecosystem is needed for mobile payments to flourish. Isis’ Chief Sales Officer Jim Stapleton addresses such questions in a Q&A for TSYS’ Thought Leadership Journal of the Global Payments Industry. Jim emphasizes that mobile commerce is as much an answer to consumer demands as a response to merchant realities. If you have questions, we suggest you take a moment to read the entire TSYS article.
